Our foundation curriculum is designed around three key dimensions:

Developing Knowledge- Children gain a strong foundation of substantive knowledge within each subject. They learn important facts, concepts, vocabulary and ideas that help them understand the world around them. Knowledge is carefully sequenced so that children revisit and build upon prior learning, helping them remember more and make meaningful connections across topics.

Developing Skills- Alongside knowledge, children develop the disciplinary skills that are unique to each subject. They learn to think like historians, geographers, artists, designers, musicians and computer scientists by investigating, questioning, creating, analysing and evaluating. These skills enable pupils to apply their learning with increasing confidence and independence.

Developing Character- Our curriculum supports children to become responsible, resilient and reflective learners. Through exploring diverse cultures, significant people, important events and contemporary issues, children develop empathy, respect, creativity, curiosity and a sense of responsibility towards others and the wider world.

Bringing Learning to Life

Our curriculum encourages children to explore big ideas and make connections between subjects. Learning is enriched through practical experiences, educational visits, visitors, performances, collaborative projects and opportunities to apply learning in real-world contexts. These experiences help children understand why their learning matters and how it relates to life beyond the classroom.

Preparing Pupils for the Future

We believe that foundation subjects play a vital role in providing a broad and balanced education. Through the combination of knowledge, skills and character development, our curriculum equips pupils with the confidence, understanding and aspirations needed to succeed in secondary school and beyond. We want every child to leave Featherstone Primary School as a knowledgeable, thoughtful and compassionate learner who is ready to make a positive contribution to society
